With shaking hands, I stuff my mouth full of yellow leaves till I feel less pain in my stomach. Mother has always told me I should take care to not eat nature s poisons, but I do not have that care inside me now. I know I must rest or I will not live. I collect wood for a fire. On a dry patch under a tree, I throw twigs and sticks and light them with my torch and feed the fire till it is high. I take off my shoes and drop down next to the heat, putting my feet and hands as close to the flames as possible. The fire reminds me of baking bread and boiling soups. It reminds me of fancies with the women of Myrthyr. It reminds me of all the good things I left at home and feel I will never see again, all because I said I wanted to come to the New World. It was my idea to come, and now everyone is gone. Why have they all left me? Why did God take mother and father away? Why?

My wrists and ankles and bloody toes ache with pain. When the fire dies down and I am warm, I lift out a torch of thick wood, and start into the forest again.
